In Chomchon Fusinpaiboon’s PhD research, he examined the design of Bangkok’s new General Post Office, whose project and construction spanned from 1928 to 1940. The long process, involving the changes of both political situations and the designs, revealed that the post office was composed by a utilitarian parts at rear and a more-important front part that welcomed Siamese and international visitors into its bright-and-hygienic space to connect themselves to other corners of the world. Decoration was not a taboo in this Thai modernist architecture. It was even seen as necessary. Together with the functional, and open plan of the building, the overall design ensured Siam’s dignified status on the world stage and trustful service.
Fusinpaiboon was the consultant on the history of the building for Department of ARCHITECTURE Co. in their participation in the design competition for the new Thailand Creative and Design Center (TCDC). DoA won the competiton, and the project was completed in 2017.
