History of South Sukhumvit

2020

Chomchon Fusinpaiboon and Prin Jhearmaneechotechai lead a team in the Research Unit of Historical Maps and Document on Urban Architecture, Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University https://www.facebook.com/cumaplab, in the study of the evolution of neighbourhood and architecture around Punnawithi and Udom Suk BTS Stations.

The study was funded by Sukhumvit Digital Parks Limited, an affiliate of Magnolia Quality Development Corporation Limited (MQDC), for the understanding of the history of the South Sukhumvit area, in which the company was developing a project. It was aimed at providing a better understanding of the area and its built environment, being aware of their characters, as well as giving some ideas for the possible utilisation of some existing buildings as part of the project. It supported the developer’s ultimate goal to not only gain profits from the development in its site but also play a vital role in the regeneration of the area.

The study illustrated how, throughout the past one century, the area developed from an agricultural land far from Bangkok in the early 20th century, to a suburb of Bangkok adjacent to an industrial area in the mid-century, and to a medium-density urban fringe of Bangkok with a mixture of everything at the turn of the 21st century.

This study forms part of academic and data sources for further studies, design, planning, and developments of South Sukhumvit https://www.southsukhumvit.com/research. So far, public and private sectors have cooperated in several projects and activities to deepen the understanding of the area to plan its future together https://www.southsukhumvit.com/content. Cloud 11 project was launched by MQDC in Febuary 2023. Set to be completed by the end of 2024, it is aimed to be a hub of the area https://www.cloud11bangkok.com/.
